(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 19, 2011 ) SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA -- South Dakota lawmakers have done away with mandatory auto insurance discounts for seniors who complete safe driver courses, according to Online Auto Insurance News (OAIN).

A state law that took effect in July gets rid of the requirement that auto insurers reward seniors who undergo driver education programs with discounts on their low down payment auto insurance and other vehicle policies.

A representative of AARP told OAIN that the law was repealed at least partly because of lobbying on behalf of coverage providers and efforts to reduce costs associated with overseeing the programs.

Senior drivers make up an increasingly large percentage of motorists nationwide, and safety experts say the effects of aging can create driving challenges. Safe driver programs offered by AARP and other organizations improve seniors abilities behind the wheel, reducing their risk of being involved in vehicle accidents and lessening roadway dangers for all motorists.

According to the Insurance information Institute (III), older motorists are less likely than other groups to drive aggressively but are more prone to hearing and vision problems and slower reflexes and may use prescription medication that can further slow reaction time.

Federal safety officials say nearly 5,200 people 65 or older died and nearly 190,000 were hurt in vehicle crashes in 2009.

There were nearly 33 million licensed drivers 65 or older in 2009, and that number is expected to swell to more than 40 million by 2020. The number of older motorists increased 20 percent between 1999 and 2008, nearly double the rate of increase for all licensed drivers.

According to AARP, 35 states and the District of Columbia require vehicle insurers to offer discounts to people who complete a state-approved driver safety course in the classroom.

And 19 states require that coverage providers offer price breaks to those who complete online courses, according to the organization.

AARPs driver safety program helps participants update their driving knowledge, learn defensive-driving skills and compensate for age-related physical changes in order to reduce traffic violations and crashes and increase safety.
